At Least We Agree on That...
Even a liberal can have a moment of clarity. Mathew Rothschild,
editor of The Progressive speaking
of the decapitations of Daniel Pearl, Nick Berg, Paul Johnson and
Kim Sun Il:
And while I've been, and while I remain,
a severe critic of George Bush's war in Afghanistan and especially
his war in Iraq, I refuse to make excuses, in any way, for these
cold-blooded killers.
Nice to hear you say that, brother Rothschild. Keep coming toward
the light!
The incoherent Left in this country are living examples of a wag's
description of a liberal - a man who won't take his own side in
a fight. I am still dumbfounded by the incredible lack of perspective
found in the anti-Bush crowd.
I once argued via e-mail with a human shield, who though human,
never got around to shielding anything. I challenged her with this.
Should you, God forbid, find yourself flat on your back in a
filthy dark alley, one rough hand of a thug clutching your throat
and the other clawing roughly at your panties you will think only
one thing about the other man you catch out of the corner of your
eye sneaking up on your attacker. You will not wonder if your
rescuer's views about the patriarchal hegemony in imperialist
America and its effect vis-a-vis the disenfranchisement of womyn
(particularly womyn of color) is in keeping with your own and
if not, can I accept his help without de-legitimizing my place
in the social construct. Instead you will wonder how hard can
he swing that tire iron at this bastard's head.
She never responded to that challenge.
I really don't care if the war in Iraq and Afghanistan really are
motivated by any of the harsh accusations leveled by the mainstream
Democratic Party. If Bush attacked Afghanistan so Unocal could build
a gas pipeline - oh well, the Taliban needed killin'. If Bush ordered
the invasion of Iraq so Dick Chaney and the Haliburton company could
get wealthy - oh well, the Ba'athists needed killin'.
First, let me repudiate these accusations. The chairman of the
Democratic National Committee should be ashamed of himself for embracing
Michael Moore's seditious Fahrenheit 911. However, when you
are in an tough situation, you take the good you can get. State
sponsorship of non-state terrorists needed to be dealt with, and
to hell with what motivates the actors. Just get it freaking
done!
And it is getting done. The lack of perspective critics of the
war effort have is stunning. Compared to past wars, WWI, WWII, Korea,
Vietnam, this war has been nigh unto a perfect. Any number of battlefield
commanders of that era would have given a non-redundant internal
organ to swap ALL of Iraq's problems for just a handful of theirs.
If you're going to call the collapse of a unspeakably evil regime
and a new sovereign democracy after 15 months and 800 lives a quagmire,
we need to go read a history book.
